Which plywood is best for kitchen cabinets?
Use BWP (boiling waterproof) or marine-grade plywood for the sink and hob units, where water and steam reach the boards, and BWR or BWP plywood for the rest of the kitchen. 18 mm is the usual thickness for cabinet carcasses, with thinner sheets for backs and drawer bottoms. What is the difference between BWR and BWP plywood?
BWR (boiling water resistant) plywood resists humidity and occasional splashes, so it suits wardrobes, beds and kitchen units away from water. BWP (boiling waterproof) plywood is bonded with phenol-formaldehyde resin and is made for prolonged exposure to water, so it is the right choice for sink units, bathrooms and exterior work.
What thickness of plywood is best for wardrobes and beds?
Use 18–19 mm plywood for wardrobe sides, shutters, shelves and bed frames so they carry weight without sagging, and 6 mm for wardrobe backs and drawer bottoms. For long shelves and tall wardrobe sides, block board stays straighter over the span.
